You may have noticed that we are ramping up original content here at Kettle & Brine. In fact, we are on the verge of launching our own tabletop collection, so there is a lot to be excited about! One new person we recently brought on is Kate Zimmerman Turpin, a well known Austin lifestyle photographer who has started shooting all of our products for our website and Instagram. We sat down with this talented individual to learn more about her career and her process.
How did you start your career?
I went to UT, where I studied art. When I graduated, I didn’t know what to do, but I knew that I wanted to be in the creative realm—so I moved to Peru for eight months. In the mornings, I'd work in a coffee shop, and then I'd spend the afternoons taking hikes and shooting photos around town. I got comfortable with my camera and built up a portfolio of the people and insane scenery of Peru; the people there are incredible and super photogenic. When I came back to Austin, I started a business by myself. Through word of mouth, I started shooting for local businesses like Hat Creek Burger Company and Camille Styles. It was slow at first, but it worked. That was four years ago.
What does your work consist of now?
I'm mainly a lifestyle photographer more than anything else. I love working with local businesses and getting to know their companies well. But I also do travel photography. I've sold travel work to Squarespace and Veuve Clicquot. I've traveled to everywhere from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to Thailand and Europe. My husband and I are going to Paris for a week this month.
What's your process when shooting while traveling?
I shoot whatever catches my attention. I don't have a formula. But I definitely pass up photos if I don’t feel comfortable taking them. I'm aware of being respectful with pictures.
What is your dream gig?
Shooting a bed and breakfast in Portugal.
Why did you want to work with Kettle & Brine?
I love the Kettle & Brine aesthetic and the philosophy behind the brand. I love the idea of consuming less but better products.
What is the goal for the photos you take for Kettle & Brine?
Hopefully creating simple, clean and minimal yet approachable photos while showcasing the shop’s unique products.
Do you like to cook?
I love to cook. I find myself making soups and curries more than anything else. I always go back to the posole soup from Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook. It's a crowd pleaser, and it's so easy and so good.
Do you have a food or drink ritual at home?
I like making a special drink every morning, whether it is matcha or coffee or a turmeric drink. I'm always blending cashews with some powders or cocoa or coffee. It eases me into the day.
